Art, Craft & Textiles
St Barnabas has many decorative features which are an inspiration to artists.
As part of the Heritage project, members of the congregation came together with local people and community groups to create art, craft and textiles inspired by the church. We looked at architectural details, furnishings and stained glass.
Margaret Elvin made drawings to illustrate the new church history booklet. She copied key details from the woodwork on the pews, and from the lecturn and font, which features fishes carved in stone.
Monica Charlemagne and Ann Willis of the St Barnabas Textile Group embroidered details of the stained glass window.
We developed a range of heritage textiles, drawing on the strawberry motif that was a signature of architect Sir Ninian Comper and is featured on the east window. The strawberry was photographed, drawn, embroidered, and then designed into a fabric. The fabric was made into a range of heritage garments, curtains and other products. We also developed a range of Christmas cards.
